The Birth Control Shot
(Depo-Provera)
The most modern approach to birth control is the new birth control shot,
Depo-Provera. This contraceptive method’s popularity is rising fast,
as there is no need to remember to take your daily pill, and no need to
go to the pharmacy once a month. Depo-Provera is a hormone injection administered
once every 3 months, so all you need to remember is to make an appointment
for a 5 minute session with your doctor four times a year.
What is in the shot?
Depo-Provera
contains high levels of synthetic progesterone with zero estrogen. It
is usually injected into the arm, thigh, or buttocks within the first
few days after your menstrual cycle has ended. However, if you are currently
using the pill or an IUD, it can be given at any time. Its function is
to prevent the ovaries from releasing eggs, causes the cervical mucous
to thicken, and changes the uterine lining. Thereby, it is extremely difficult
for sperm to enter and survive in the uterus. The contraceptive is 97%
to 99.7% effective - no supplies to take home, no patch to wear - a very
simple and discreet form of contraception.
Health Risks
As with any form of hormonal birth control, the birth control shot Depo-Provera
is not without health risks.
- Prolonged use (more than 2 years) can cause loss of bone density,
resulting in increased risk of osteoperosis.
- It is not recommended for teens whose bones are still growing, for
women who are breast feeding, or for those who have had blood clots,
certain cancers, and unexplained vaginal bleeding.
Health Benefits
With proper use of the birth control shot Depo-Provera, it is
possible to gain valuable health benefits.
- In certain women, it decreases the risk of endometrial cancer, ovarian
cancer, and pelvic inflammatory disease.
- ther women have experienced less menstrual cramping and a reduced
risk of anemia.
Note that Depo-Provera does not protect
against sexually transmitted diseases such as
HIV/AIDS; it is therefore important
to take precautions in order to protect yourself
against these diseases.
