Sexual Lubricants
Many
people misconceive sexual lubricants as sex toys or something used at
the doctor’s office. But sexual lubricants are also very useful
tools for women who have trouble with self-lubrication or who need help
achieving orgasm.
Vaginal Dryness
An estimated 20 million American women suffer from vaginal dryness—and
as a consequence, painful intercourse. Dryness can result from menopause,
childbirth, stress, and even the use of certain medications. Vaginal dryness
can sometimes be a great obstacle when trying to achieve orgasm. It can
make sex painful and even unbearable for some women.
Psychological Obstacles
Some women have trouble achieving orgasm because of emotional problems
such as stress, fatigue or depression. While professional help is useful
and the support of a loving partner is essential in overcoming such obstacles
and making sex pleasurable again, vaginal lubrication can provide a little
comfort along the way. There are sexual lubricants that are specially
formulated to enhance female clitoral pleasure, and they can be purchased
in any sex store or online.
What should I look for in a sexual lubricant?
If you are using a condom during intercourse, it is important to look
for a lubricant that is either water-based or silicone-based.
Any other type of lubricant, such as one with an oil-base, will cause
the condom to tear. Water and silicone-based lubricants are also safe
to use with diaphragms, dental dams and sex toys.
How do I use a sexual lubricant?
Simply apply a generous amount of the lubricant to the clitoris, or as
otherwise indicated on the label. Because water-based sexual lubricants
tend to dry up after a certain amount of time, you may need to reapply.
Can lubricants be used with oral sex?
Many sexual lubricants are hypoallergenic but you must check with the
lubricant’s label or research the product to ensure that it has
been approved by the USP for food use. Either way, play it safe and do
not ingest the product.
